How has - in the context of globalization - the role of representation been changed by new technology and the greater "flow" of images and media across cultures? Has the bandwidth of images been narrowed in this new "mediascape"? What artistic and representational strategies arise out of this new context? What cultural, aesthetic and political assumptions need to be challenged or promoted today?
Candice Breitz, Oliver Ressler and Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber will present relevant art works and discuss their approaches to the aesthetic and social question of representation. This discourse is part of and reflects the ongoing media- and communication project "TONGA.ONLINE / www.mulonga.net ".
Die Diskussion soll das Projekt "TONGA.ONLINE" , das im Rahmen der Ausstellung "Spuren des Regenbogens - Leben im Südlichen Afrika" im OÖ. Landesmuseum in Linz eine Internet-Plattform zur Kommunikation mit den Tonga eingerichtet hat, im Kontext des aktuellen Kunstdiskurses reflektieren. Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt.
Die Ausdehnung der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien hat zu einem ungeheuren Strom von Bildern und Informationen quer durch die Kulturen der Welt geführt. Welchen Einfluß hat dieser globale Medialisierungsprozeß auf die Dynamik zwischen den Kulturen und deren Repräsentation? Hat die Informations- und Bilderflut den Horizont der Auseinandersetzung und die Bandbreite der Visualisierung ausgeweitet oder eingeschränkt? Welche Bilder und Botschaften setzen sich durch und welche werden zum Verschwinden gebracht? Wer hat überhaupt Zugang und wer ist ausgeschlossen? Aktuelle künstlerische Strategien der Repräsentation versuchen diese Entwicklung bewußt zu reflektieren: welche kulturellen, ästhetischen und politischen Annahmen und Konzepte werden dabei kritisiert oder gefördert?
Candice Breitz, Oliver Ressler, Sabine Bitter und Helmut Weber werden ihren Zugang zu diesen Fragen anhand ihrer jüngsten Arbeiten vorstellen und diskutieren.
